In addition to phishing e-mails use of deception, the links contained in the e-mails pose further danger for consumers. The links, upon opening, have been designed (without users knowledge) to channel through other sites for purposes of downloading viruses or even spyware (software that secretly monitors user activity), either of which can cause harm. Even worse, the spyware can transfer captured data to fraudsters for Identity Theft.
