Letter on School Search Manual
Dear School Officials and Parents:
With tragic incidents becoming too much a part of the modern educational landscape, it is appropriate that I present you with this "School Search Manual," part of the "Safe Schools" project conducted by the National Association of Attorneys General and the National School Boards Association. This manual is intended to be a practical guide regarding the law on student searches to be used by public school administrators, principals, teachers, parents, school safety officers, school resource officers, school security guards, prosecutors, other law enforcement officials and school board attorneys. Above all, this manual seeks to promote a safe and productive learning environment for all Florida students.
This manual provides a checklist and sample report form for school officials, school safety officers and school resource officers on the factors justifying student searches. Also included are tips on conducting safe, effective student searches.
While this manual reflects the Office of the Attorney General's interpretation of the law on student searches, schools should contact their school board attorney and State Attorney's Office for guidance on specific student search issues and for creating their own student-search policies.
Florida's children deserve schools in which they have the opportunity to learn, free from violence and drugs. We hope this manual helps each child realize this goal.
Sincerely,
Attorney General
