Spam is a popular term for unsolicited commercial electronic mail. Not all spam is illegal. Florida’s law prohibits fraudulent, false or deceptive spam. Unlawful spam is a daunting problem, but through coordinated efforts of federal and state law enforcement, Internet Service Providers, and concerned citizens, we are working to address the spam invasion. Despite a coordinated approach, it will take a determined effort to truly combat spam. In the meantime, tips available for consumers may serve to heighten awareness and eliminate some negative consequences associated with spam.

The FBI has become aware of e-mails being generated with the subject line “FBI Investigation” and implying the e-mail originated from the FBI. The e-mail requests the recipient’s assistance by purchasing merchandise via the Internet. This e-mail is fictitious, and its origin is being investigated.
